NFL players hope for Hemp Extract use

By Scott Herberg November 22, 2017 0 comments

The NFL and NFL Players Association are looking at the potential of allowing players to use Hemp Extracts for football-related injuries like CTE and chronic pain. NFL players including former All-Pro New York Giants defensive lineman, Leonard Marshall, former Bronco Jake Plummer, and current NFL player Seantrel Henderson have come forward to openly discuss the rising evidence suggesting Hemp Extracts could help football related injuries.

Currently, the most commonly prescribed painkillers in medicine are opiate based and are allowed by the NFL. However, Hemp Extract is currently banned under the NFL’s substance abuse policy and any player that tests positive for the compound on two or more occasions is subject to suspension. This is the same case in Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. All three leagues suspend players for multiple positive Hemp Extracts tests.

Many are hoping for less punitive drug policies related to using Hemp Extracts.

Players’ bodies take constant abuse playing football. Torn muscles and ligaments, chipped and broken bones, dislocated and separated shoulders, lower spine trauma and brain trauma are common abuses the players’ body receive. Pills and injections are the norm in football, with great long-term health concerns. Often citing the unwelcome side effects of these intense prescriptions- lethargy, depression, stomach pain, addiction risk- some players have chosen to self-medicate and others have followed doctor’s orders to medicate with Hemp Extracts. Many players seek pain relief using hemp-derived Hemp Extracts products from reputable brands like Earth Milk, since the risk of testing positive for THC is largely diminished as hemp contains no more than the federal maximum of .3% THC.

Preventing symptoms like irritability and aggression and helping reduce and relieve pain, inflammation and motor impairment are attractive benefits potentially offered by Hemp Extracts. Hemp Extracts role as neuroprotective and reducing dependency on addictive opioid painkillers are also being reviewed by the NFL and NFLPA. Many retired and active NFL players believe the compound is an effective alternative to the potent painkillers they receive while in the league and that players should be allowed to use it.

In 2013, years after he experienced consistent head trauma as a professional football player in the NFL, Leonard Marshall was diagnosed with CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy- linked to repeated head trauma and brain injury. Over the years, CTE caused Marshall emotional and physical pain and he became concerned about the severe side effects caused by the intense prescription drugs he was taking.

Marshall and other players have conducted their own research into the healing benefits of Hemp Extracts and looked for reputable research sources.

“Evidence shows that Hemp Extracts are neuroprotective. I would have each individual take a capsule an hour or two before they play or practice. It’s better than nothing,”

stated Lester Grinspoon, professor emeritus at Harvard in an interview with the Washington Post in late 2016. Retired Col. Phillip Blair (US Army) MD, a US-based Hemp Extracts expert says,

“The research is compelling and the increasing positive reports from CTE and brain trauma sufferers like Marshall is promising.”

Hoping to treat CTE and the pain associated with it and other neurological disorders with Hemp Extracts, Marshall has taken his brain injury and head trauma prevention message on the road to health organizations and youth sports leagues.

Former Bronco’s quarterback, Jake Plummer, and four other ex-NFL players, as well as one current one, have teamed with a hemp producer and its partnering non-profit to help raise money for essential research to find out if Hemp Extracts are a safe and viable treatment for pain and symptoms of concussions and CTE. Working together with researchers at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania to study football players’ use, and the body’s long-term tolerance of cannabinoids. A study at Johns Hopkins University is studying the effects of Hemp Extracts and CTE very closely. Heather Jackson, executive director of the non-profit said recently,

“We need to get more players using it [Hemp Extract].”

After being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which involves inflammation of the bowel, current NFL player and proponent of Hemp Extracts, Seantrel Henderson says he began using Hemp Extracts to treat the pain that he suffered from the disease.

His doctors ordered him to take Hemp Extracts because the painkillers would have been harmful to his intestines and recovery.

Twice, he was suspended by the NFL for using Hemp Extracts. His suspension for using a doctor prescribed medicine to treat a disease has been the core component of the argument of Hemp Extracts advocates for changes in the NFL’s drug policy.

While the research is far beyond complete, the studies and anecdotal evidence are mounting which reveals the healing benefits of Hemp Extracts. Coupled with non-psychoactive and non-addictive properties, Hemp Extracts is quickly gaining mainstream awareness and acceptance.

For the NFL players and their families, this could not come at a more crucial time than during the controversies surrounding aggression, chronic pain relief, opiates and head injuries.

Perhaps soon Hemp Extracts will be removed from the Banned Substances List allowing the players hoping to use Hemp Extracts, the opportunity to safely medicate without the use of opioids. Shop NW Hemp Products for Hemp Topicals
